Some Links For Your Perusal

Some links that may be of interest, mostly from our trusty Blogroll sites:

***A new study out says mothers who are not supported with “baby-friendly” practices in their hospitals (like nursing within an hour of birth, not using formula or pacifiers, and having lactation support on site) are 13 times more likely to quit nursing within six weeks.  That early support is SO CRITICAL.

***Motherwear Breastfeeding Blog has a nice post for Blog Action Day 08– Fight Poverty on how BFing supports women who live in poverty– namely by fighting disease, controlling fertility, and by being Free.

***Did you hear that the American Academy of Pediatrics just upped its recommendation for the RDA of of vitamin D? Since formula is fortified with vitamin D, they specifically noted the breastfed infants need to be supplemented.  Good old kellymom has some great info on supplementation.  Sounds to me like children just need adequate doses which they can pick up from a healthy, balanced diet, plus some sunlight without sunscreen each week.

***Here are instructions for making your own kid-sized Flinstones car.

***Have you tried the Free Rice site? It’s a vocabulary quiz game, and for every correct answer you get, rice is donated to the needy worldwide. Warning: Totally Addictive.

***Here’s a fun site with lots of quick recipes for feeding hungry toddlers.

***There were a couple of good posts recently over at the Attachment Parenting International blog. One is about toddlers and their need to find out who they are by bumping up against the will of their parents, and how to deal with that creatively and playfully.  The other is about the need for fathers to be totally present with their children, and it included this great quote, which I’ll leave you with:

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don’t try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
